Title of this Position: School Health Support Nurse Reports To: Head School Nurse
The
School Health Support Nurse plays a vital role in promoting and protecting the health and well-being of students within the school community. Under the supervision of the Head School Nurse, this position provides direct nursing care, assists in the implementation of comprehensive school health programs, and ensures effective communication with students, families, and staff on health-related matters.
In collaboration with the Head Nurse, the School Health Support Nurse helps identify student health concerns and disabilities, facilitates referrals and case management, and provides health education to support students' physical, mental, emotional, and social development. The nurse also supports preventive services, including health screenings, immunization tracking, and health promotion activities, with the goal of reducing barriers to learning and promoting academic success.
This position is instrumental in delivering specialized nursing care and health guidance that enhances students' ability to achieve optimal wellness in the educational setting.

Major Responsibilities Include Under the supervision of the Head School Nurse, the School Health Support Nurse will:
- Deliver direct, age-appropriate nursing care to students with acute or chronic conditions, injuries, and emergencies.
- Support daily health room operations, including medication administration, record-keeping, control of communicable diseases, and triage.
- Collaborate with the Head Nurse to monitor and manage student health plans (e.g., Individualized Healthcare Plans, Emergency Action Plans).
- Provide support in executing school-wide health screenings, immunization compliance tracking, and health education initiatives.
- Act as a liaison between the school, parents, and healthcare providers to support student care and well-being.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and school policies.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning and respond to school emergencies as needed.
- Assist with health-related communications, education campaigns, and staff wellness activities.
- All other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Skills Education - Current and active RN or LPN license in Delaware (required)
- CPR and First Aid certification (required)
Experience - Prior experience in pediatrics, school health, or community nursing preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a student-centered mindset
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented educational environment
- 3-5 years of acute health care and medical documentation experience
Skills - Ability to communicate clearly, compassionately, and professionally with students, families, staff, and external healthcare providers across diverse backgrounds and situations.
- Strong attention to detail in maintaining accurate student health records, documenting communication, and managing confidential files in compliance with school policies and legal standards.
- Capable of adjusting quickly to the varying physical and emotional needs of students, as well as the dynamic nature of the school health office environment.
- Remains calm, efficient, and responsive during medical emergencies, utilizing sound clinical judgment and established protocols.
- Ability to recognize differences in student health needs and adapt communication styles, care plans, and interventions accordingly.
- Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, supporting the Head School Nurse and collaborating with educators, counselors, and administrative staff.
- Comfortable using electronic health records, school health software, and standard office applications for documentation and communication.
Compensation This position will require approximately 28.75 hours per week during the school year.
