Orientation schedule: Monday-Friday 06:15-14:45 for up to 12 weeks.

Helping to perform over 200,500 cases in 2022, our OR nurses work with solid-organ transplants, cardiovascular surgeries, orthopeadics, and more. \nJob Duties\n

  • Assesses and documents physiological, psychological sociocultural and spiritual health status of patient on admission utilizing age- age specific concerns for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Performs ongoing assessment of patient's physiological health status during intraoperative phase.
  • \n
  • Communicates relevant health status data to other team members and departments. Interprets health status data to anticipate patient's family, and physician's needs and expectations.
  • \n
  • Develops appropriate plan of care for patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing intraoperative nursing care.
  • \n
  • Identifies and implements appropriate intraoperative nursing interventions based on health status data. Completes accurate and timely documentation of these interventions. Confers with all members of health care team in collaborative fashion, sharing information and observations of patient and/or patient's family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
  • \n
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care in accurate and timely manner. Prioritizes intraoperative nursing interventions per patient's health status data, physician, and planned procedures as applicable.
  • \n
  • Adheres to appropriate hospital policies, procedures, and standards of nursing practice while delivering intraoperative nursing care.
  • \n
  • Provides appropriate and timely patient education to patient and/or patient's family. Completes accurate and timely documentation of education provided. Demonstrates effective communication with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
  • \n
  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates patient care assignments of other members of healthcare team. Delegates duties within legal parameters.
  • \n
  • Prepares for procedures as appropriate by obtaining supplies and equipment in timely manner.
  • \n
  • Serves as technical subject matter person, resource person, and/or preceptor to nursing staff. Completes written clinical performance evaluation form in timely manner.
  • \n
  • Handles and operates instruments, supplies, and equipment and performs safe nursing care in manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care.
  • \n
  • Solves minor problem issues of counts and errors, patient care, relationships, equipment, supplies, and environment prior to management intervention.
  • \n
  • Provides and supports efforts to develop and maintain team environment.
  • \n
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

\nMinimum Qualifications - Education/Experience\n
    \n
  • Graduate of NLN approved nursing program. BSN Preferred.
  • \n
  • One (1) year experience is required.
  • \n
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license
  • \n
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • \n
\nKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities\n
    \n
  • Able to serve as a professional and technical subject matter person in 4-5 surgical specialties.
  • \n
  • Able to circulate as needed in all surgical specialties unless specialty call required (open heart, transplants, neuro). Call may be required (general, open heart/transplant, or neuro).
  • \n
  • Able to operate basic/standard pieces of OR equipment.
  • \n
  • Work requires use of considerable judgment in application of procedures, nursing assessment techniques, practices and policies to work problems, organization, and administration of hospital activities.
  • \n
  • Work requires ability to maintain current customer service, nursing, and technical skills by attending training programs and seminars to continue level of competency and ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • \n
  • Work requires ability to complete most assignments with substantial independence.
  • \n
  • Work requires good verbal and written communication skills.
  • \n
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English
  • \n
  • Work requires proficiency in the use of computer technology. Work requires ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations.
  • \n
  • Work requires frequent contact with physicians, residents, fellows, allied health personnel, and other medical and/or non-medical office support personnel to coordinate necessary information to provide optimal level of patient care.
  • \n
  • Work requires telephone contact with patients, referring physicians, and pharmaceutical representatives outside of UT Southwestern, vendors, and third party payees.
  • \n
  • Work requires constant walking, standing, bending, turning, and stooping. Pushing and pulling heavy objects such as patient beds.
  • \n
  • Must be able to help lift and turn patients.
  • \n

Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in a hospital unit/environment. The incumbent may be exposed to body fluids and infectious diseases. Pass pre-employment physical exam including colorblind testing.
